What Happened in Episode 9 of Chainsaw Man?

In the beginning of the episode, Himeno’s death leaves Aki traumatized. She pleads with Aki not to die, so that when she passes away, he can cry for her. Meanwhile, Power is unable to defeat the Katana man and runs away, leaving a grieving Aki behind.

To honor Himeno’s wishes, the Ghost devil helps Denji start his chainsaw before dying. Once the chainsaw is activated, Denji rushes towards the Katana man and the two engage in an intense battle. Denji easily overpowers the Katana man.

Katana man’s partner shoots Denji, slicing him in half and seemingly killing him. However, Denji remains unconscious due to blood loss. Meanwhile, Makima, who is not actually dead, arrives in Kyoto where Kuruse and Tendo are waiting for her. She is covered in blood and reveals that she killed all of the assailants on the train. She then instructs Kuruse and Tendo to collect 30 convicts with life sentences or worse.

The convicts are brought to the temple. Elsewhere, the kidnappers try to load Denji’s body into their car, but one of them is crushed. Akane calls to check if Makima is dead, but is informed that the team that was sent to attack her has not been heard from.

At the temple, Makima blindfolds the convicts and begins her secret Jutsu. She asks them to repeat names and as they do, the assailants are killed. One by one, all the attackers are dead.

Akane realizes that only Makima could have such power and tells the katana man that they should leave. However, Kobeni appears and attacks them, preventing them from kidnapping Denji.

Knowing that the katana man is injured, Akane gets him into the car and drives away. Madoka informs everyone that most of the people in Divisions 1 through 4 are dead and the remaining divisions will be under Makima’s direct command.
